David J. Franks

With expertise derived from more than 25 years of experience, Mr. Franks focuses his practice on the needs of small and medium-sized businesses, working with management in all areas of business operation, including:

  • contracts, employment law
  • creditors’ rights, bankruptcy
  • purchasing and sales, finance, insurance
  • real estate purchase and leasing
  • corporate and business record-keeping
  • protection of trade secrets and intellectual property

In addition, though he is no longer a litigator, Mr. Franks regularly works with litigation counsel to enhance management’s understanding of the litigation process and to keep the participants focused on the long-term interests of the client.

”Understanding the client’s business is important. It enables me to think like a manager, and to identify issues before they become problems. It is also, frankly, one of the things I most enjoy about practicing law.”

Mr. Franks also handles the buying and selling of businesses as well as the formation of new businesses. He draws upon the expertise of the entire firm to meet the client’s needs for compensation and benefit plans, pension and retirement programs, estate planning and succession planning.

In those situations where the client needs advice in matters which are outside his areas of competence and not otherwise available within Bassey and Selesko, Mr. Franks will gladly help his client find the right attorney for the project, and will coordinate the work of that attorney with the overall legal needs of the client.

Mr. Franks received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan Law School and his Bachelor of Arts in from the University of Michigan, cum laude.

He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan and the Courts of the State of Michigan.
